An update...I worked out in the woods this morning. I only maintain the front part..maybe 10 feet deep all across the woods. I leave the part behind that pretty natural, aside from clearing large pieces of branches that fall during storms and debris that may have collected there. I took the weed whacker with me and cut down the dead stems that were all over the area. I like to do this early, so that when the wild flowers come up...I'm not stepping on them. I pruned the three clematis on my trellis and then raked what I had cut down. I would work a little and sit a little....keeping in mind that I would have to haul my lawn cart full of tools back up to the house. As I sat there, I looked it over and thought that it looked pretty good and ready for Spring and what comes with it. The bird houses that had fallen were back up and ready for their occupants. The birds were flying in and out of the woods. They were waiting for me to leave, so they could investigate all the spots that I had raked.I don't believe that I have lost anything due to the horrible winter we just experienced. The new bushes have buds on them...I am anxious to see them in bloom. I came back to the house and came in to fix dinner. I'm so thankful that I can keep gardening. We will take it a year at a time.
