My Jackson and Perkins catalog arrived today. Such beautiful roses. I saw those pinks and remembered how I planted marigolds last year and was never happy with them. I have been trying to think how I can change my gardens this year. I want to achieve something very simple that doesn't require much watering or deadheading.I want to be able to sit on my lawn chair and enjoy it...not work all the time. The front garden is pretty much the way I want it. Just a few annuals will be added.There is something blooming there for the whole growing season. One change would be that I would put drought tolerant plants in the big pots and only have one hanging basket, that can be changed with the seasons.I just completed the east side of the house last year with new mums (that are supposed to come back) , lilies and some bird nest spruces. The west side of the house is mostly a jumble of different things. I planted ajuga early on and it is everywhere, I dropped in some Easter lilies from Church, and then there is a mish mosh of different plants that had no where else to go.Do you have a place where you just plant things...not knowing where else to put them? My trellis is there with the clematis vines too. I would really like to have 3 shrub roses (knockouts) with herbs in that area. Maybe some lamb's ears too. Gray and pink combo is always my favorite. I am still thinking about the back of the house. We have many different hostas, a collection of lilies and an azalea. The azalea isn't happy there, but it was planted there when I moved in and was a gift to my husband...he would like it to stay in the same place. The woods border just needs to be cleaned up and maybe plant some burning bushes across the front for fall color. These are just a few ideas...I'm sure I will change my mind many times before the Spring work starts. It will all depend on my knees and how ambitious I am in the spring. Let's hope the Japanese beetles are in someone else's yard this year.

The weather today was cloudy, foggy, snow showers, misty rain, and cold. We traveled to Sycamore behind snowplows...clearing the 1 inch of snow that fell during the night.
