We were starting to have a shower this morning. Joe and I went out to sit on the front porch to watch the rain come down. It is so dry here...the lawn looks like straw. Joe was about to do his happy rain dance, when he glanced down on the concrete floor and saw some very interesting foot prints. It hadn't rained long, so our intruder had just been here.
I quickly looked to the left at our hummingbird feeder...empty! The little marauder had been here just minutes ago in broad daylight...trying to grab a drink of juice. It makes me more alert now...I won't be going out on the porch in the dark and chance sitting on one. We already knew who it was...the raccoon.
The question is how did he do it? The feeder is hanging so high and nothing was disturbed around it. The feeder simply fell apart, when he started drinking...and maybe he had to make a quick trip off the porch, when he heard us coming. Part of the feeder was in the flower bed.
The red dot shows how high the feeder hung. We're thinking that it must have been a big one...with perfect balance to have managed to drink out of it on that slippery railing and nothing to hang on to, but the feeder.
We both wished that we had been able to see it. I had ideas in my head for pictures for this blog. Joe had other ideas that involved a weapon. I don't think for a minute that he would shoot it, he's kind of a softy. This fellow may be a little bigger than the last ones we saw...we'll have to keep alert.
