Belated Christmas..home movies and Rose of Jericho

Our belated Christmas celebration was a lot of fun. We snacked, ate a meal, opened gifts and watched old home movies. They love to watch those old movies showing their Dad when he was little. He was a real ham, when he was little. His brother and sister were 10 yrs. older than he was, so he was set up to do all kinds of silly things when the camera was on. We always laugh till our sides hurt at his antics and also the clothes and hairdos. As I look back...we had a lot of fun in back then. We played lots of games and even the grandparents joined in. We didn't just sit around at birthday parties...we had a lot of laughs. How about the two Grandmas on the floor trying to roll a peanut through a paper towel tube? Or walking around with a potato on our shoes.... The Bozo bucket game played with assorted bowls and buckets.... A homemade pin the tail on the donkey. Kids now days look at these goings on and can't believe how such simple things could be so much fun. We watched my son's teenage sister running backward down the street and into the house, because she wouldn't show her face...her hair wasn't just right.... The first car and it's take off down the street with my 16 yr old son driving.... Various cooking segments with the kids stirring and making a production out of smelling the aroma coming out of the oven....Beloved family pets doing their thing....Kids sporting events...a wild field hockey game....and of course the famous faucet dripping, birds in the snow eating popcorn and the very lengthy segment of the squirrels playing in the backyard. The kids Dad had a day off and too much time on his hands, so we watched that part forever. All in all, it was a good day on Saturday.

My son was given a Rose of Jericho for Christmas. He saved it to bring to our house , so I could watch. There are several websites on the internet, where you can go to read about this fascinating plant. It is also called resurrection plant.
It came in a plastic bag and looked like a dried up head of dill. You place it in a saucer of water and slowly throughout the day it changed and finally filled the whole bowl and turned green. Later you take it out of the water and it goes back to it's original state. Next year at Christmas you can do the same thing over. I hadn't heard of this, and found it very interesting. I took pictures and so did my son, but I am having some problems with new camera..so I will post pictures from the internet. Have you ever seen these?

Sounds like everyone had a wonderful time, Balisha. I love looking back at old movies. Like you, the clothes and hairdos crack me up. I have movies of me with teased hair! I will have to check out the Rose of Jericho. Thanks for sharing.

Old family movies really are a lot of fun to watch.

I have never heard of the Rose of Sharon - very interesting!

Thanks for the parsnip planting tips - they are a little more expensive than carrots to buy so we are going to try and grow our own.

Hello Judy,
We all thought that we were so stylish back them and now they laugh at us.

Racquel,
We had a nice time, but it didn'r really feel like Christmas. We left the tree and village up so it would be more Christmasy.

Islandsparrow,
I don't think that the Victory Garden took that much care with all their parsnips, but the one for the contest was really babied. I love parsnips. My family ate all those root vegetables. They have so much flavor. Thanks for reading.

What lovely memories ... we did live in a simpler time didn't we? We made our own entertainment, and were never bored with nothing to do.

I will have to check out the Rose of Jericho also, never heard of this.
