A Sentiment

God knew what He was doing when He sent a gentle breeze and brought a lovely butterfly to set my heart at ease. The happiness of your friendship and the gentleness of your words have touched my life in special ways and now I feel assured. Thank you for your loyalty and for reading everyday. I only hope you find things to make a happy day.

Little Girls I remember Well

I was saddened yesterday to hear about Shirley Temple's death. She was a little older than me and was America's Sweetheart. Mom and I loved her movies and I think Mom tried to make my hair look like hers....using that dreaded curling iron to make my very straight hair curly. This little girl made life easier during the depression...she brought a smile to every one's face.
Then five more little girls came into my life. The Dionne Quintuplets. Five little  babies born to a couple in Canada. It seems that these precious little ones were used for advertising on so many household items in our country.. I only remember this calendar that hung in our kitchen. Mom was fascinated by them...as were many other  people. I was reading about them this morning and found that only two are still living. They were used to promote all kinds of products, earning their country $20 million a year during the depression. They were exploited and the two remaining have to fight for money even now.

I was a little girl just at the end of the depression...this was such a time of little money. Simple things made us happy in those days. Sitting on the horsehair sofa, with some bread with brown sugar on top, and a cup of ovaltine, and listening to Shirley sing the classic song... "On the Good Ship Lollipop." We had a big floor model radio in those days...that along with the old upright piano were the focal points in our house. We had very little, but I thought we were rich...because of the love in our home.

Such a sweet post today. I was sad to hear about Shirley Temple too. That is terrible about the quintuplets being exploited.
I wish times were as simple and "clean" as they used to be. I enjoyed reading your memories.
We are snowed in today which is rare for GA. Have a nice evening.

I used to love the Shirley Temple movies. I hope she had a happy life. I have read that the Dionne quints did not.

I too had the curls--hurt to have my hair brushed and then curled into ringlets every morning! BUT--we were adorable, you have to admit that. I remember my Grandma talking about the Dionne Quints--yes, they were so exploited!!

Balisha,
Great post. My husband's Grandmother knew her, they were great friends and when my hubby's Grandmother passed away Shirley was at the at the wake.

Even though I am going to be 46 yrs. old April 15th, I watched all of her movies those were the GREAT OLD DAYS.
Not like today with all the junk on T.V.!

We are getting more snow and ice today here in Mass so please you stay safe and warm.
My FIL came home yesterday so I am off to take care of him today!
Big Hugs,

Her movies are still precious! Oh, I do remember Ovaltine. I tried and tried to like it because Orphan Annie advertised it and "drank" it, supposedly. I think Mother must have bought a box, at my request, 2 or 3 times over the years, but I just couldn't like it.
