A Sentiment

God knew what He was doing when He sent a gentle breeze and brought a lovely butterfly to set my heart at ease. The happiness of your friendship and the gentleness of your words have touched my life in special ways and now I feel assured. Thank you for your loyalty and for reading everyday. I only hope you find things to make a happy day.

A Woman Gardener

"Fall is not the end of the gardening year; it is the start of next year's growing season.  The mulch you lay down
will protect your perennial plants during the winter and feed the soil as it decays, while the cleaned up flower
bed will give you a huge head start on either planting seeds or setting out small plants."
-   Thalassa Cruso

Thalassa Cruso is to gardens what Julia Child is to kitchens—and says so: "I admired Julia Child's work and had the same thing in mind." Cruso went to the same public television station which discovered Julia, Boston's WGBH, and suggested a gardening program with such brash confidence that reading her own proposal now "makes my hair stand on end." With some misgiving, the station agreed. Her 54-part series, Making Things Grow, began in the fall of 1967 and, Cruso recalls, "it hit the right moment. The rising wave of interest in plants has been cresting ever since. We were out to reach the fire-escape gardeners. We expected interest from older people. The huge young audience surprised and delighted us. Perhaps their interest had something to do with the alienation of the '60s—an attempt to get rooted."
I was such a fan of this woman...along with Julia and later Martha Stewart. They all have changed the way we live... in my opinion.

There's always next year. Today, I was imaging how my newly painted deck will look next year with my pots of annuals on the steps and gracing the railings. I can barely wait! LOL

I'd like to read more about Thalassa Cruso. This summer I read a book of letters between Julia Child and her friend Avis. It was fascinating to see what they went through to get that first cookbook published. You never know where your passion will take you ~

Hi Sharon,
I once saw a documentary about Julia Child and was so surprised by her life story....especially her work for the OSS during WW 2.

There's a story in the New York Times about Cruso...

I really enjoyed this quirky knowledgable women. She often was on Johnny Carson's show.

Hi Judy,
You are looking ahead just like so many of us gardeners. Please post a picture of your porch...when it's finished and decorated.
