A Sentiment

God knew what He was doing when He sent a gentle breeze and brought a lovely butterfly to set my heart at ease. The happiness of your friendship and the gentleness of your words have touched my life in special ways and now I feel assured. Thank you for your loyalty and for reading everyday. I only hope you find things to make a happy day.

Peach Galattes at the Farmer's Market?

This post is all about food....summer food. The season is almost over and we want to take advantage of all the goodness that comes our way. My daughter goes to her Washington DC farmer's market almost every week. I think that her market is a lot larger than ours. We are just a small town and our people support all the events that go on. We have a great town spirit...sports events, little theater, Church events, and in summer...the farmer's market.

After getting up really early this morning I first checked the slow cooker. I had put some ingredients in it last night for beef barley soup. I had some pot roast leftover and used it for the meat in the soup. Actually, I cooked two small pot roasts so I could use the leftovers in several ways.Joe always kids me about stretching a meal into two or three. He says to get out of cooking. Well, this way involves some creativity and sometimes more work than if I had made something new.  I grew up this way...we never wasted food at our house and I have a hard time throwing anything good away. My high school foods teacher made such an impression on me saying..."Girls call them planovers...not leftovers" She was a wonderful cook and taught me everything I know about cooking. The soup cooked all  night while we slept. It will be our meal today along with a sandwich for Joe.
I took the dining room valances down last week and left them at the cleaners. They were done yesterday and I waited until I was fresh and full of energy to put them back up. I have to stand on a little, sturdy, two step ladder and go up the two steps...so I was super careful. After that job...I decided to clean up and go to our little farmer's market.
These are pictures that I took this morning. Everyone was out enjoying the beautiful early morning. Gardeners were selling their produce and handmade items. Everyone is so friendly...even the man who sold me old corn :(
Here are the veggies that I bought. I put them on the table for a picture and Joe came into the room and sat at the table and helped me shuck the corn, clean the beets, and "tip and tail" the green beans. We'll eat some of each this weekend. I have the beans cooking right now. I'm going to be naughty and cook them with bacon...the southern way. Another naughty item.....look carefully.....see those items on each side of the vegetables? Peach Galettes. Who knew that someone in our little town knows how to make these French desserts. Well, I guess that most anyone can watch Ina on TV and learn how to do them. I've made them and they are easier than a pie. I just thought it funny to see a Peach Galatte at a farmer's market. He had peach everything...jam, pies, galattes, dumplings...I had to hold myself back and buy only these two. These are individual and there's one for each of us.....along with a scoop of vanilla ice cream...oh honey!...as BJ would say. http://sweetnothingsbj.blogspot.com/
Balisha

An add on.....I often mention BJ in my posts with a link to her blog. She takes the most beautiful pictures of food that I have ever seen. She makes delicious looking recipes. I swear this woman can make a graham cracker look good. I always look forward to her posts...maybe you would too:)

Balisha, I love the Farmer's Market
the one in my small town - not much. But soon going to Nashville
and will stop at the big one.
I love it...
Something in the air as I cannot stop sneezing. On mower this morning and keep saying never again. It will happen soon...

I have my head between my tail...I had such good intentions to go to my farmer's market this summer and so missed the mark. One day I went and I was a day off. Another day I went and was an hour off. My sort of luck!

I need to use my crock pot more. Emily made a gorgeous pot roast the other night and I shared it with her as her and my hubby were working late. It's not just for winter and in fact, it sure beats a slow cooked stew in a hot oven for three hours.

I just love BJ and we've been friends for 4 years. I agree about the food and I just love the fun way she writes. I'm glad to see you following her, too!

XO,
Jane

planovers....I like that!

I always cook extra, too. It's just too much work to make a homemade meal for two people. Yesterday we made chicken pot pies...took a good two hours. We had them for dinner and froze enough for three more meals.

I like the idea of 'planovers' too. Your trip to the market looks lovely and summery. Things have turned a bit colder here in the UK. Jx

I'm ashamed to say I don't visit our local farmers' market very often. But this summer I've had enough vegetables from our own garden to keep up with. I think we've just about had our fill of sweet corn and summer squash:)

I grew up the same way as you, Balisha--my mother never threw anything out. I'm not as good as using up leftovers, though; I feel guilty when I clean out the fridge and realize how much we've wasted. I could use some of your tips on using leftover potroast!
