A Sentiment

God knew what He was doing when He sent a gentle breeze and brought a lovely butterfly to set my heart at ease. The happiness of your friendship and the gentleness of your words have touched my life in special ways and now I feel assured. Thank you for your loyalty and for reading everyday. I only hope you find things to make a happy day.

Labor Day...a Day for Labor?

I'm letting my bunny garden go to seed this year. I want to watch and see who comes to visit this little patch of green. This was my French Mesclun mix of salad greens and there are so many different types of lettuce there. I have lettuce in another place for us to eat. I've heard that bees will be attracted to the flowers and some birds will come for the seeds, so it will be interesting to watch. It may even self sow for next year. This little patch has been a favorite spot for visiting rabbits. That's what I had hoped for. I plant in containers mostly, so they can't disturb my other things. Some may think it's an eyesore, but I think it's quite pretty. I love seeing how the different types bolt.
There are other things setting seed right now. My 1st year Purple Hyacinth Bean is busy making pods of seeds. This vine has been my favorite new thing for 2013. I try to grow something new every year. I just ordered some seeds from Burpee. Cardinal Vine is one of them...a new one for next year. I think I'll start them in the house this winter.

I ordered some rock garden daffodils to plant where I have my memorial garden for Tim. I just can't dig anymore (besides the soil is so hard in that place) and these have small bulbs, so they don't have to be planted so deep. They are all different colors of tiny daffs.

I plan to go out in a few minutes and cut down the hosta stalks. They have done so well this year. One hosta had stalks taller than me... There are still a few flowers, but I need to start cleaning up the gardens and this is first on my very long list.I learned a few years ago to just leave the hostas till the very end. They are so easy to rake up and don't require very much cutting.

The roses have to be the best flowering plants this year. They have bloomed almost nonstop. The plants are so tall and will be cut back this fall. I never give them any winter protection. I'm wondering about my new Yabba Dabba Doo roses...will they need covering? I was just thinking about when I started this blog many years ago...one of the reasons I started it was to tell about my Chrysler Imperial Rose, that was a gift, and see if I could gather some information on how to keep it living. I had never had luck with roses in the past and I really wanted to keep this one alive. Well, the Chrysler Imperial bit the dust, but I have continued on and learned so much from some of you about rose care. Now....if I could only get my orchids to bloom. That's another story.

So, I'm off to do some work...work that I enjoy on this Labor Day. Hope you and yours are having a nice long weekend. It's sunny and cooler here and I have some fun things to do..

You have such a wonderful green thumb! The blooms are lovely. I think I may have told you before, but I am lacking in the green thumb category!

It's been a great summer for our perennials. Today my sister came and dug up some plants that belonged to our mother, to put in her new gardens at The Farm. So strange that these plants came from that farm, have all died out at that farm, I have them, taken from that farm 30 years ago, and now---they are going back to their original place of birth.
