I bought a little carton of California Wonder pepper plants yesterday. Four plants to be exact. I hate that I have to buy more than I want at our local nursery. I only wanted 2 ,but had to buy 4 if I wanted them. So, I bought them home and waited until evening to plant. There was an open space in our yard...where nothing was planted..right? Oh, my gosh!!!!!!!...I couldn't have that. I really wanted a cucumber that didn't trail...one that I could contain in this smallish area. Couldn't find them in town and figured that the cost of gas would be more than the plants themselves...and I really wasn't going in the direction of the nursery for anything else, I should just stay here and shop. So, I came home with 4 plants and some marigolds.
Marigolds happen to be one of Joe's favorite flowers. I have read about marigolds deterring insects and pests. Although the sunny annuals have been used in this capacity for many generations, little documentation exists showing marigolds actually repel insects. In fact, they may attract harmful pests damaging not only the marigolds but also your vegetables. I have had marigolds full of earwigs, which can eat all the leaves overnight. Still, I think that they look pretty amongst the veggies and maybe they will take care of some pests ...I don't know...just wishful thinking on my part. As I planted these little plants, I had visions of sweet green peppers just coming out of the oven, filled to the brim with a mixture of rice, tomato, and ground beef....or chopped and added to my favorite pasta sauce, or arranged on a veggie platter, or filled with a dip for chips and veggies, and then there's pepper steak...oh honey! I hope that they like their neighbors...the marigolds. Personally...I don't like their fragrance. It would be enough to keep me away.
