Bryce came over and brought his Gator.He was picking up branches and sticks before I could get out the door. He had his Gator almost full. I really enjoy working in the garden with this boy. He is 14 yrs old and is so responsible and easy to talk to. As he picked them up we talked about a lot of things. I gave him a couple of hints on how to work with the tools that he was using and why he should wear gloves. He got to use my newest tool to cut the dried stalks from the Sedums. He really liked using this one. I bought it thinking that it might save my back when doing some trimming. I could hardly get it away from him. We worked our way around the house while talking about sports, school, clothes shopping, his sister's first communion, his 90 yr old Grandma, and so many other things. He asked about Joe and his garden. Would he be planting tomatoes this year? Bryce had a garden for the first time last year and Joe gave him helpful advice about growing tomatoes. I told him that Joe probably wouldn't be planting any tomatoes this year. He asked why? I told him that Joe and I are getting older and the planting isn't the hard part...watering and taking care of them when the summer is hot... is difficult. As we talked I began to think about tomatoes. Wouldn't we wish for a ripe tomato out of our own garden this year? How much work are they really? When we were finished and the load was dumped, I sat for a bit and thought it out. This year will be no different. I arranged two large containers next to the deck. There is room on the little patio at the foot of the deck stairs... for two chairs and a small table. The containers are in front and in the full sun. Chairs back against the house in the shade. I made a plan...I would plant two patio tomatoes in those pots. They would be close to the house and easy to water. My container in the nearby garden will have lettuces and herbs. I'll tell you more about the other containers tomorrow. I'm getting excited about this project...I hope my excitement rubs off on Joe.

He sounds like a fine young fella. Container vegetables sounds like a fine idea. Most of mine are grown in containers that have water reservoirs in the bottom so I do not have to water as much if it does not rain.
I think your tomatoes in containers sounds wonderful. You will be glad you did that when you walk to the door to pick a few fresh tomatoes for your summer salads.
My litle square foot garden will be smaller this year. 2 yellow squash, 2 zuchinni, 2 tomatoe plants, a green pepper plant and have some lettuce and onions planted now. Hopefully I can take care of this. Just enough for me and when Jamie visits might be something for her. I have herbs in pots by terrace and they are really no problem. A few in the dirt that are really spreading. I like the scent of them by my old rocking chair. I have a young man who helped me clean my gardens.
Twice a month for 3 hours. Think with this I can hadle. Will see.

This year, I put two pots on my back porch--easily accessible to the back door for watering and picking. I just cannot have no tomatoes!!!
