A Sentiment

The happiness of your friendship and the gentleness of your words have touched my life in special ways and now I feel assured. Thank you for your loyalty and for reading everyday. Scatter Pins

With Valentine's Day coming and seeing all the jewelry ads on TV...it set me to thinking about when I was a girl and what we wore for jewelry. I got to thinking about scatter pins this morning. I used to have several of these sets. Back in the 50's, when I was in high school, we used to wear blouses that needed to be ironed. We wouldn't have thought of wearing a blouse that hadn't been pressed. The "wrinkled look" wasn't "in." Most blouses had Peter Pan collars that buttoned at the neck. Sometimes the short sleeves were a little blousey and buttoned too. We wore silky scarves at the neck. I had scarves of all different colors. They weren't really silk...but a chiffon like material. Square and folded in half diagonally, rolled and tucked under the collar and tied at the neck. Just a square knot...no bow. Well, anyway on our blouses or sweater we would sometimes wear little pins in groups of two or three. They were called scatter pins. Costume jewelry. I had pins shaped like poodles, ladybugs, and hearts.
I found lots of them at Etsy this morning. I really enjoy this way of shopping. I could spend a lot of time going through the various "shops' without ever leaving my chair. You can find anything there. I wanted an unusual purse for a wedding and Joe found one to match my dress for my birthday last year. They have handmade jewelry and vintage alike. You can just type in scatter pins, for instance, and all types of scatter pins are shown.
These aren't my pictures. They are from Etsy http://www.etsy.com/search?includes%5B%5D=tags&q=scatter+pinsIt's very addictive, looking for things at Etsy. Everything I've ordered arrived promptly, wrapped in pretty paper, maybe with a cute sticker. One arrived in a little handmade cloth pouch, all with little notes from the artist who made it. Such care is taken to please the customer. The prices are very reasonable. You can have something handmade for a small cost.
I can't say enough about these Etsy artists. I made handmade things for many years and would always support local artists. I knew, first hand, how much time and care went into each product. It sounds like this post went from scatter pins to promoting Etsy....that wasn't my intention. I just appreciate handmade things and wanted everyone to know about Etsy. I guess I'll devote some time today to look for my scatter pins. Gosh, they're old, over 60 yrs.

Balisha, so much of this type of jewelry I got rid of years ago.
Replaced with a few special nicer pins.
Rhinestone pins are popular and wrote a special daughter in Michigan - who goes to sales and collects everything - she sent me 2 beautiful small rhinestone pins that I wore during Christmas.
Would be interesting if I had much of what was discarded over the last 50 years :) much of it has returned to be popular...

Like I said those aren't my actual pins. I too got rid of many things including jewelry. I have so many nice things, but I wish I had kept some of the things from my childhood.

I collect 1950s costume jewellery! Over the years I've bought loads of pieces which have been shipped from USA. I don't have any scatter pins but I were vintage Coro, Lisner or Trifari pretty much every day! I especially love matching bracelets and necklaces! Jx

I love to wear pins and always get comments on them.
