I Made a Trellis

This is a tutorial of sorts. I have been searching for a trellis for my smaller Clematis vines that I just planted this year. The garden, where it is planted, is very small. I wanted one that would just disappear into the flowers. I got an idea when I was at the garden center...looking at tomato cages. The round ones....they come in all different colors. I chose two black ones...very inexpensive. I put them together like this....I turned one upside down with the wires that should go into the ground facing up. I took the other one and put it with the wires facing down...inside the first one. I then pushed it down as far as I could and fastened the two together with plastic cable ties...(you know those little plastic strips that one end slides into the little box shaped end and try as you might...you can't get them apart.) I used several of these on both tiers. Voila...I have a new trellis. I took some heavy wire and bent it in the middle, forming a U shape. I pounded these into the ground in 6 different places...holding the trellis in place. I'm thinking that if the Clematis grow more...I can train them on the porch railing. I'm happy with how this worked out. I am pretty handy with doing things that are creative. I've always been able to make something out of nothing to save money.

could you add more tomato cages to the top without making it to heavy?

Very clever idea! I think it will most certainly disappear when the clematis begin to grow upwards.

Hi Cathy and zoey...I picked the color black for just that reason. I want it to disappear. I think, with additional support...you could use more that two cages. Maybe if it was up against something...it could be fastened to it. The vine really shouldn't be too heavy though. It wouldn't work with honeysuckle for instance. Balisha

You know what Balisha, we spend a lot of money on trellises and then they are hidden by the climbing plant! This is a wonderful idea.

Great header!

What a great idea...and easy to do yourself. Every time I ask Lou to help me with something like that it is a major production. Love it!

I don't know how long it will last, but some of my other trellises haven't lasted long either. My only concern is that the vines will be too heavy for it later on. I'll keep showing it as the vines grow. Balisha

Now what a great idea and how well you have made the trellis. Shop bought ones always seem to be too large and spaced out.

Now aren't you just a smarty. LOL! What a great idea. Can I steal it?

Hi Barbara and Lona...I only had a small space. I was looking at some others shaped like an obelisk, but they wouldn't work. Lona...You can copy...I do hope it holds up. The little vines are checking it out already..LOL

Hi Pat...I know...sometimes you have to wait so long for them to help. I just forge ahead, and sometimes I need to ask for help.
