I woke with the birds this morning. I knew that it was going to be hot today, and I wanted to get those weeds in the woods. I took the weed whacker and went down the lawn to the woods. As I was doing the job, I got to thinking that someday I'm going to have to just forget the condition of the woods and give it back to the critters. They would probably like it better natural anyway. The trees that I have planted are finally bringing color to the edge of the woods. My little redbud was just a stick in a 1 gal container. Look at the picture above and see how it's grown. My lilac is full of flowers now and the crabapple tree is full of blossoms too. Last year I planted a mock orange, hibiscus, redbud, and a forsythia. The hibiscus is leafing out a little...redbud is not. The other two are growing by leaps and bounds. These were specials at Aldi's, and very cheap. Getting back to what I was saying about not taking care of the woods... I guess I'll continue till I drop. This morning I was greeted by wrens, woodpeckers, orioles, chickadees, nuthatches, chipmunks, and many sparrows. The naughty little wrens are occupying three houses this year. They aren't in any of the houses that they used last year. Two of their choices are made of metal. I thought that these would be just for decoration, but they seem to like them.
I came back up to the house and cleaned my tools, put them away, and watered some seeds. I came in the house really tired. By now the temp had risen to the 90's. Time for me to clean up and relax. We turned the AC on for the first time this year. With the ceiling fans going the house cooled down fast. I fixed a small dinner...sloppy joes, cottage cheese and lots of fresh veggies. I was ravenous. Joe had been to the gym and was tired too. We just sat and watched a couple of shows that we had saved on our DVR. We sat there for a couple of hours. Now, here I am, doing my post. I can see the birds out the window...the robin is flying back and forth to her nest on the wreath, the little chipping sparrow is scooting under the cranberry bush just out the window, and two doves are on the roof across the street. I can't hear them anymore...that's the trouble with the AC...we can't hear birdsong, but for today...it was especially nice to be cool.
