Avocado Update...is She Doing The Watusi?

This is a post about my avocado...she is growing in the cool basement in front of the window. I will refer to her as Ava. She loves the place where she is growing ...now that I have added more light. I went down to check on her last week and she was all curvy...something desirable in women, but not plants. It looked like she was doing the Watusi. Out came the shop light and I switched on the lever and voila...she turned to me and whispered where are my sunglasses?
This poor thing was started with another seed, but alas the other didn't sprout. Before I knew it she had grown so tall and spindly...I wondered if I should cut her in half...ouch! I asked the question and some of you said no.

Her leaves started to sprout. Teensy, tiny ones at first. I'm wondering now...hmmmm will her stalk support heavy leaves? Only time will tell. I went down this morning to take her picture. The first is without a background of white. Ava looked at me and said in her little plant voice, "I'll never show up in the picture." So I grabbed the nearest thing and put it behind her so she will show up. There, that's better. Now, I was checking the leaf situation and decided that she was big enough for a first haircut. A trim you might say. See that top leaf? The shiny light green one?
This hurts me more that it hurts you, Ava....snip! I have always hated pruning or thinning plants. Just when they start getting showy...snip!

Now the leaf is gone and Ava may start to stop getting so tall. Maybe she'll branch out. Maybe she'll just fade away. Shut my mouth...It may bring bad luck. Tomorrow she will get fed. Oh, boy, Miracle Grow. She will probably get so big...that I will not be able to get her out of the basement. Only time will tell.

I remember my Mom growing one on the window sill long ago. Can't remember how long she had it.

I think Ava is growing tall because she is looking for the light. She needs more sun than she is getting. If she can't go outside, a florescent light will help immensely. Also, have you fed her? A little half strength water soluble food will help.

Trying to not be bossy here, but I would not cut many leaves. She needs them to make food to grow on and for transpiration. They will help her to get stronger. If a leaf turns yellow or brown, whack it off.

I love to grow avocados from seed. It always seems so worthwhile.

If you have just started blogging, you are doing a very good job. Welcome!

I had one years ago, Marnie.Nice sunny day here...we had better enjoy these days.

Now Janie...I have been waiting for a knowledgable person to comment on this avocado. Thanks for your tips. You aren't being bossy at all. I appreciate your comments. I have been blogging for a little over a year. I will make a visit to your blog next.
Thanks to both of you for reading and taking the time to comment.

I remember my grandmother growing one. She also put a sweet potato halfway down in water and grew the vine indoors for an indoor plant. It seems all the women were doing it at that time. I wish I had paid more attention to how she did both. I just remember toot picks in the seed to hold it up, or something. And, a certain end of the potato had to go in the water; I don't remember if it was the pointed end or the rounded one. Interesting all the easy to acquire things that people grew so they could have house plants.

Hi Balisha, I used to grow avocado plants all time when we first got married. We didn't have the $ to buy nursery plants. haha
You do have to make sure that they get plenty of light. When they reached about a foot tall, I pinched them back about halfway. It makes them bushier. You also should fertilize them -I used miracle gro in a real weak solution.
I kept them for a long time and eventually had to re-pot them into 10-12 inch pots. Gee I should try growing some again- I'll have to remember to save the pits next time I make guacamole!

hugs, Sue

I think Ava looks pretty good for hanging out in the basement all this time. Put miracle grow on her and she may bust out of her pot or grow like Jack's beanstalk and you will have to climb up the stem to prune her! I cannot resist a Snickers bar...I love them. That is the cutest poem. You are so talented with your poetry.

Hi dear! Sorry I have not been by to visit. I am so tired I can hardly do anything these days. Work has me totally stressed out. All I want to do is sleep. Maybe I will feel better in a few weeks. I hope so. Hugs to you!
