A Sentiment

God knew what He was doing when He sent a gentle breeze and brought a lovely butterfly to set my heart at ease. The happiness of your friendship and the gentleness of your words have touched my life in special ways and now I feel assured. Thank you for your loyalty and for reading everyday. I only hope you find things to make a happy day.

An Evening Stroll

Last evening a friend stopped by to check out my woods. She hadn't been past the front yard in quite a while. We walked through the backyard, now changed because of no dog fence, and approached the woods. The wrens were singing and birds started swooping and flying away because we were coming. The bird feeder was swinging quickly...some critter had just jumped off and was scampering to a safe place. For the first time this year...the mosquitoes were buzzing. The frogs in the pond next door were making their evening music. As we neared the little woods a pin could drop and we would hear it. It was silent. The wren hurried out of her house. It was just approaching dusk...a favorite time of the day. We started at one end of our property and started walking. The flowers were really at their peak. She was so surprised how many flowers started with a bag of wildflower seeds. We talked about how they were scattered in the fall and just left to nature to do their thing. The hostas were getting really big. They like it back there...not disturbed and room to grow. We checked out the lilac bush that was planted a couple of years ago...this year it has really come into it's own. The redbud tree was just a sprig a couple of years ago...we talked about how fast it was growing. She hadn't really noticed the crab apple tree until I mentioned it. I bought it at a garden center at the end of the season. It was out behind the sales building in a 6 inch pot. It was growing like a crooked twig. The price was right and I brought it home and planted it. My hubby likes to buy things that are big and perfect. He wondered at the time why I was wasting my time on this "twig" My neighbor and I laughed because the tree is taller than he is and has branched out beautifully...not in the least crooked. The clematis vines that were nothing, when she was here last, have filled the trellis with a million buds. I am anxious to see what it will look like. The mosquitoes started munching and we fled to the front porch to visit. A nice evening for gardeners to compare notes and take a tour. I will go over to her yard next week sometime. Not many people do flower gardening in my neighborhood..maybe a few hanging baskets and a flowering shrub...they are young and so busy. They do notice and comment while they are walking by...maybe they are gardeners in waiting.

Thanks, Barbee,
Sometimes I get a little stumped about what to post. This is my journal...for me to remember things daily...but if my simple ordinary life can be something that others want to read about ...I'm happy.

I too enjoy your blog. You always seem to say something that speaks to me. I remember getting a free tree many years ago as part of an Arbor Day celebration. It was a little twig and my husband laughed and thought I was wasting my time planting my "tree". It wasn't too many years before that Ash was taller than our house. I had not thought of that for years until you mentioned your twig.

Twilight is my favorite time to walk in the garden. My camera is struggling with the low light photos so I try to take my pictures before 7 pm.

You asked about cutting back nepeta. A lot of people cut it back after it blooms in late spring. I've done that and haven't been too happy with the results. Mine continues to bloom all summer when not cut. Of course the bloom isn't as heavy as the spring bloom. If you do decide to cut back, I believe it needs to be watered until it grows back.

Dusk has always been my favorite time of the day. Sounds like you had a good visit and stroll through your woods. I used to be one of those gardeners in waiting. Now, I love it.

I enjoy a diary type blog too. I enjoy the politics occasionally but they wear me out sometimes.

I would love to walk through your woods, and see the results of your plantings and see scatterings.

Hi and thanks for the nice comments and information from Marnie. A word about the woods...right now a walk through it would be getting caught up in the tangled mass of growth in the back. I keep the front of it looking pretty good, but this year Ma Nature has gone overboard with her weather... that has been great for growing lush greenery. Another thing.....the mosquitoes would eat us alive right now.

What a nice stroll you & your friend had in the garden. Don't you love it when you bring something home from the nursery that doesn't look like much & it really does well!
