A Sentiment

Why are We Like Our Feathered Friends?

Yesterday was still too chilly for me to work outside for long. I have been fighting a cold and didn't think it wise to stay out and work. Instead I checked out the bird visitors to our yard. The first bird was the sparrow. I spotted her out of my bathroom window. I have a large pot that I found a new place for. This story happened a week ago. My husband was gone and of course I can't wait for anything, so I decided to move the pot myself. Of course, it was way to heavy for me...so I turned it on it's side and rolled it down the hill. I got it right where I wanted it and now the soil was trailing behind ....where I had rolled it. There was one large frozen clump right on the ground next to the pot. I just left it there to thaw. While I was looking out the window, a week later, Mama Sparrow was on top of that clump...just tearing it apart. She flew back and forth so many times. Why, with all the debris on the ground, did she have to have this particular nesting material? It would have been so much easier to just pick it up off the ground.

I hung a spring wreath on the front porch and later, while looking out the front window, I saw the finches coming to the porch and then flying away. They looked over the new light fixtures and decided it would be easier to build on the wreath this year. Now in past years...we keep taking the debris that they bring away and they bring it back. Why don't they just find another spot. It would be much easier for them.

We watched a Mama bunny digging a hole for her nest...right in the middle of the grassy area, where the dog is. We filled it up with dirt and patted the grass back down. She came back and chose the same spot as before. Why didn't she just do this near the woods...where she would not be disturbed? She was determined to build it in the same spot.

Wrens go to the work of taking debris to a house each year in our yard. They never raise their young there....just keep on removing nesting material and putting new in. They are the most determined ..sassy little birds.

Birds are very stubborn creatures. They are kind of like us..when we are determined to do things our way, even if there is an easier way out. We try so many things....trying to get family to get along, giving advice, getting along with a stubborn neighbor, raising an unruly child, trying to have our way with just everyday life decisions. We are like those determined birds. We wonder why they keep going at it the hard way.... why do we bang our heads against the wall...why do we continue beating ourselves up? I guess all of God's creatures have similarities.

How right you are. Have a great day. I stayed out all day yesterday and it was chilly. Hope we do not get colds.

We sure do all have some of the same traits. One year a bird built a nest on my front door wreath and nearly scared me and the bird to death every time I opened that door.

Well said, Balisha! We really are a lot like our bird and animal friends. And...thank you so much for your comment on my blog. It meant a lot to me. You are a wise lady and I appreciate you and what you have to say. Always.
I wish we had more wild life around...but they have been crowded out. How wonderful to live in an area like you do!

Hi Balisha!

I wish you are now feeling better with the colds, the weather and all... :)

Very nice reflection on the similarities of God's creatures... Indeed, we are also like birds - stubborn at times... :)

Hi Ladies,
I share that trait of being a bit stubborn with the birds.
I think we get set in our ways as we age...and sometimes it's hard to change to meet someone else's expectations.

Oh yes, I've been birdbrained too many times. It must be that we think we're right & the rest of the world is wrong. I'm sure that's what they birds think.
