A Sentiment

God knew what He was doing when He sent a gentle breeze and brought a lovely butterfly to set my heart at ease. The happiness of your friendship and the gentleness of your words have touched my life in special ways and now I feel assured. Thank you for your loyalty and for reading everyday. I only hope you find things to make a happy day.

I was out early this morning. I had to run some errands and was on the hunt for sweet corn. I spotted the sign for our local farmer's market and made a quick right turn. It is a muggy, overcast day here on the Rock River. The market is just a short distance from the river. It is a small market...like our town. People come from our local farms to set up their card tables and the back of their vehicles to sell their wares. These people are hearty people...familiar with hard work and the weather didn't scare them away.
This morning I could buy eggs, lots of tomatoes, squash, onions, peppers, and the honey man was there. I love his honey for my tea. I think that it tastes better....just because I bought it at the market. A table was loaded with fresh baked goods. Breads of all kinds...and those wonderful homemade pies. The pie lady is a busy women. Everyone knows how much work goes into a homemade pie...and she must be a whiz. The basket lady was here too. She has a small shop in a nearby town and makes wonderful baskets. I drooled. There were crafts of all kinds. Birdhouses, canes, wooden ware for the kitchen, crochet, too much to list. I love talking to the people who have stands and also the people who shop there. Such a friendly summertime thing to do. I hope that this tradition keeps on going down through the years. I know that the small farms are vanishing, but I'm an optimist.... and have faith that there will always be someone selling at a market or along the road.
I went for corn, but none was to be found. They said it was too rainy and stormy today. We are leaving for yet another birthday party today...we'll look for it on the way.

I too love my local farmers market, we have 5th and 6th generation family farmers there. It has been in the same spot for over 75 years and although it is in the inner city it is bustling on Saturday mornings.

Nothing like meeting and talking to the people who grow your food to appreciate it all the more.

I also buy our local honey :) What are those wonderful eggs you have there ?? Love the colors!

I just added my favorite cookie recipe. I'll bet that you make these too, Ohiomom. They are a great summertime cookie. I love anything with lemon. I will use some of the eggs in my recipe soon.

My daughter lives in DC. She talks about going to her farmer's market too. I guess that they are everywhere.

This is getting long...When I moved here about 6 yrs ago..I went to this maarket... and found that it was just one small card table with tomatoes from one seller....so it has grown.

Looks like they had some great produce & other various items at your local farmer's market. We don't have anything like that in my area. :(

I, too, love the local farmers market. The fresh veggies are so much better than the ones in the supermarket. If you click on the blog 70 plus and still kicking in my sidebar, you can see the farmers market in Australia where June Saville goes. It is evidently huge and looks absolutely wonderful.

Hi Balisha
It's good to meet you! Well done Judy.
Good to hear about a fledgling farmers market. It's a great way to obtain fresh produce. As you could see in the post to my blog, ours is a popular part of the community, and there are many others in the Northern Rivers area of New South Wales in Australia.
The one I pictured is mainly for food but there are others which have almost anything that could be sold - crafts, secondhand etc etc, as well as food.
Good luck with your blog.
Cheers
June

Hi June,
Thanks for reading. I wonder how many countries have markets like these? We have had stands along the roadways for years, but the farmer's market is new in our area.
