The Year Of the Succulent

I get a newsletter from Margaret Roach often.I first "met" Margaret on the Martha Stewart show.Margaret started gardening in her 20's. Her mother had early onset Alzheimer's and in gardening, Margaret could find some peace and tranquility. I find that same peace when I garden...so I know what she means. She was Martha's first gardening editor and made many appearances on the show. She went on to become Martha's editorial director. She gave up her cushy job and took to the woods, so to speak. She now finds herself at home with nature...gardening, writing books, and living alone with her cat. I have one of her books and soon I'm going to order the 2nd one. I read her post this morning and she mentioned that 2013 is the year of the succulent. So glad that this tough group of plants is getting it's share of glory. I have little pots of them everywhere.

From the concrete planter on the purple chair. A friend, Betty, who lives up the road...made this using a big leaf and concrete. She has made so many of these... using all kinds of leaves.
To the strawberry jar...not holding strawberries, but sedums of many kinds. This picture is old and now it is overflowing.
My daughter was visiting and brought me a styrofoam fish box. I painted it with concrete paint and kind of beat it up and then planted it. The box has sat in the same place for a few years. It's a favorite place for critters to visit...even the snake.

This year I planted a hanging basket with succulents. It looks much different right now. Things have grown...I'll have to take a picture soon.

This is the planter that sits by the front door. I started it just a couple of years ago. It's grown by leaps and bounds. Needs very little care and I don't have to drag that hose.
I guess you could say that every year is the year of the succulent around my house. There are many more...even some that have planted themselves by dropping out of the pot.I think that they are my favorite plant for a hot, dry summer.

I have noticed more and more gardeners doing succulents in pots. I tried my hand at it last year...planted about 5 in a clay saucer. They did very well, but come fall, I wasn't sure what to do with them with our cold weather. The saucer was large so I really didn't have a place for it and to be honest, they didn't look so good inside as they did outside! So, what do you do with your succulents come cold weather?

XO,
Jane

You have a wonderful garden, Balisha! I so envy you.

Blondie, Mine always made it through the winter just fine.

Your succulent planters look great! I don't have much luck with them, probably because I tend to over water. I really must try again. As you say, they are great for a hot dry summer.

Hi Balisha,
What a great container you made from a Styrofoam fish box! I don't have very many succulents. I really need to get a few more.

Jane, in answer to your question...I just leave mine outside...maybe a little covering of leaves..but that's not even necessary. I do,however, bring in my strawberry jar.I'm afraid it would crack. It sits in the garage all winter. I feel sorry for it and sometimes I just put water in my hand and give it a sprinkle as I walk by.Not necessary though.
I've tried some of them in the house, but have had no luck with that...they look pretty bad in the house.Hope this answers your question.
Margie said she leaves hers out too.

Hi everyone...I think that succulents are really quite pretty. I watched a video of a florist making a living wreath with some of them. They do walls with succulents. I tried to use an old chair..with no seat. I fashioned a seat with chicken wire and filled it with moss and sandy soil. I planted it with hens and chicks, but they didn't do well at all..so I gave up on that idea.

Balisha, I thought I posted a comment here yesterday. Did I..or am I dreaming. Your flower garden is gorgeous. I also am beginning to be more interested in succulents. The are really wonderful and I wonder that I haven't grown them before.

Shucks--that's what I was thinking of and going to buy last week and...I forgot. I always had Hens and Chicks in my rock garden. I left them out all year--we have hard winters and they were fine. I think tomorrow I shall trot across the road to the nursery and try and find some. I need a new outside plant idea!! thanks for reminding me.

Your succulents are so pretty. For the past three years I have been meaning to try planting some hen and chicks plants, but I always end up spending my budgeted money on the blooming flowers. Are there any succulents that you would recommend for bright, but shaded areas? I hope this will be the year for me to finally plant some.

I used to have hens and chicks which I THINK are a succulent ? Purple Sedum is probably the only one that I have now...

You have so much loveliness going on in your garden! :)
