Here are two pictures of the statue of St. Francis in the woods. The top one was in 2009 in the month of May. The white pot has been removed and brought up to the house to use for a container for a tomato plant. The hostas are just starting out. It looks pretty bare and dark...this was taken in the evening I think.
Now here it is in May, 2012...same place only much different. the sum and substance hostas are huge on either side of the statue. The tallest plant to the left is a rose of Sharon in red. The little tree to the right is a tiny redbud tree. The pot was replaced by another huge hosta...I forget it's name. In front of the statue you can see a mass of daisies and sweet William to the left in front. There is wild ginger planted there and lilies of different kinds. Phlox are everywhere...not planted by me. There are columbine and Virginia bluebells there too. I have tried to keep things separated and put some space between plants, but this year I've had to let it go and things have just grown like wildfire. You can hardly see St. Francis...I may have to bring him forward or just take out some plants in front if they get too big. I planted all these things in the past and now I'm just leaving it alone. Just shows you what a couple of years can do...if nature is left to do it's thing without much help from human hands.Balisha

It seems the garden likes to grow and flower for St. Francis. It is abundant now. I think you are right about moving St. Francis up some. It wouldn't disturb the garden and he could be seen again more easily. I have some areas that have grown well without my help in a year or so.
I think you should move St. Francis up some too. Then he could be seen better. The garden looks lovely though!
I love the natural look. I have Creeping Charlie taking over my front flower bed and I KNOW I should thin it out but like that natural look. Hosta's. I'm not familiar with them..but I found a place online that sells miniture ones. I think I will buy one just to see what it is like. Have you ever seen them in miniture?
From the picture yours look gorgeous. Do they like shade? The left side of our home is very shady and only red apple is planted there and it is so full of spiders..I've removed some of it but I need a nice shade plant to put there and wondered if Hosta's would work in total shade.
I..actually felt a wee foolish when I bought those shoes..but glad I did now.
My girls haven't seen them..so..not sure what will happen when they do! :)

I think St. F. would love that area. No telling who/what flits about, or travels through there under cover.
I think that the statue will stay where it is until fall, when all that greenery is down. By then, maybe I'll feel like doing something back there. I know I won't be able to move him, but I can find someone who will. It's really not very safe in the woods, since the high winds have taken branches part way down. There are a couple of big ones dangling over head. I had to move my bench to a safer spot.
