Waiting

This spring the warm, warm weather has taken us by surprise. The trees that would have bloomed this month or next have bloomed already. Our lawn was mowed, for the first time, in March. The spring bulbs have, in many gardens, already bloomed. We have had to scurry to get our summer clothes out. The birds have however, kept to their regular schedule. I took a brief walk to the mailbox early this morning and took a few pictures. I have several things in my garden that are waiting. Waiting until I know for sure about the weather. Empty Terra Cotta pots look pretty sitting in the garden empty. I love the look. I have several empty pots in this little garden. They are waiting for the time to plant some color. I think Dipladenia will go in them. Maybe a hot pink will look nice this year. My strawberry jar has little hens and chicks in all the holes, but they are waiting too for heat. I noticed some cosmos seedlings growing here and there. And my purple aster, on the corner, is slowly coming up and will fill the corner with color.
This trellis was planted with two clematis last year. A Princess Dianna, and one called Pagoda.Pagoda is winning the race to the top. I'm hoping that it will reach over to the porch railing and trail along that. I'm waiting for the first blooms on these two.
Here are two birthday presents from my son and the grand kids. He gave me my first bleeding heart years ago, and I've wanted another for this house. I received two. I heard a frost warning for this week, so I'm waiting to put these in the ground.
There is one plant that isn't waiting. I call it Lamium...( Lamium is one of the best choices for a tough yet showy perennial ground cover. This selection forms a spreading patch of small silver leaves with a narrow green edge. Clusters of soft pinkish flowers appear in spring, then continue off and on until fall. Fairly tolerant of dry shade, once established. Trim back in late winter. Stems will root into the ground where they touch, and any new plants that form can be easily moved in spring or fall. Also easily divided. Evergreen.) These are in full sun and they do well here.
I planted just a little pot of this a few years ago and she took off and hasn't stopped. I can rip it out and try to contain it...and it just creeps back. I love the way it fills in around other plants. I usually trim the tops off and it will keep on blooming. A mass of lavender.

So you see...we are all waiting until it's safe to plant. Don't be impatient this year...Mother Nature may throw us a zinger.
