A Sentiment

The Wrens Missed Out

We had some branches trimmed off the River Birch last fall. There was a short, broken branch...the bottom one.. that I wanted saved. It is where this little birdhouse hung. It has always been the home of a wren family. One year I saw a little pile of twigs on the ground under it and sat to watch for a bit. She was taking them out...one by one and dropping them on the ground.. Her way to "spring houseclean" I sat there for a while longer and there she went dragging them all back into the birdhouse...one by one. She picked up the whole pile. I guess she wanted to rearrange things.
Well, our neighbor came and trimmed the tree and left the broken branch....kind of laughing at me. There the little house hung all through the fall and winter. I was out yesterday and looked toward the tree. The house was missing. I walked over to check it out and there it was on the ground...still fastened to the little branch. The other branches are too high up in the tree for me to hang it safely. So, I checked around and found a new place for the birdhouse...in our ash tree. I hung it up and went back into the house. There was a flurry of activity around this new house. I could almost hear the little birds..."Did you see the new house?" "Oh boy a new house in town!" "I wonder if it's available?" "It needs a coat of paint." This morning it looks like the new owners will be moving in. Guess who the new owners will be? A couple of sparrows. Oh, no...why aren't the wrens here yet? Now they will miss out on their old house. Now I'm wondering if there will be a tiff between the sparrows and the wrens when they return. I've seen those mighty little birds reclaim their previous homes.....fighting to protect their territory. Time will only tell. I can see the house from my computer desk...so I'll be the first to know.

Just checked out the eagle cam...I spied a little feathery thing under Mama.

It is good that the house is in use again this year. It will be fun to watch the new owners as they keep house.
