Tales From My Desk

We have very few squirrels here at our house. When one makes an appearance, it's time to take out the camera and just sit and watch it for a while. This chubby squirrel has white ears. I think it is a female ......not really afraid of us, but cautious. She has been coming most every day. She doesn't stay long, so she isn't being a pest. She made her first appearance here after all the snow storms. I've always had a special place in my heart for these creatures. We used to have a black fellow that visited where I used to live. We called him Blackie...how original! I've seen albino squirrels when traveling down through So. Illinois.Well, back to the white eared squirrel, she's out there right now...eating some seeds and suet and watching me with a careful eye to see what I will do. She's welcome here and later today I will crumble some suet cakes to put on the shelf feeder, so she can taste the berries in the suet.
Yesterday, we were at a friend's house, and I was watching a squirrel running up and down the tree in the front yard. This squirrel was checking out two holes in a branch. Poking it's head in and out and making the holes a little bigger. Our friend's are in their house much of the time, because he is disabled, and the birds and squirrels provide hours of entertainment for them. Even their little dog, Buddy, jumped up and had to take a look for himself. Speaking of this little pup, he greeted us just like we were coming to visit him. Dancing around our ankles and barking so cheerfully. The cat, Tiffany, just sauntered in, like cats do, and checked us out too. Cats never want you to know that they are happy you're there...they are so proud and elusive. It was fun to watch these two animals interact. Buddy would play with a toy and Tiffany looked like she was saying, "Grow up." When the action got too close to her...she arched her back a little and hissed at the pup....just to let him know that she was there and would not tolerate him getting in her way. They are both rescue animals and really hit the jackpot when they came home with our friends. The living room has beds for both animals, loads of toys and even a container of green grass for Tiff. They pretty much rule the house. Buddy has a fenced in back yard, but was begging to go for a walk in the front of the house. I guess the grass is always greener even for dogs.
Before our visit yesterday, we had a nice breakfast out at a new restaurant. I had the most delicious omelet. The filling was full of roasted vegetables. They weren't cooked to death...crispy and fresh still. Roasted artichokes, eggplant, red peppers, mushrooms, zucchini, and herbs. and then it was stuffed with goat cheese. I'd never had goat cheese before and found that I love it. It has such a tangy yet sweet flavor.
Today, we go to Mass. Next week we will celebrate with a St. Joseph's Table at Church. I'll tell you more about this celebration tomorrow. Have a nice weekend everyone...Six more posts till my giveaway. Keep the comments coming for the drawing.

Buffy was really glad to see you.LOL! Maybe it thought you were going to take it home for another visit.
Something has been getting to my bird feeders too but I have not caught it yet to see if it is a squirrel, raccoon or deer yet. Since it happens at night it is probably those pesky raccoons again. Have a wonderful weekend. It is a rainy one here today.

I enjoyed this newsy post, of course you knew I would love reading about your friend's pets. I could just see them - the good way you wrote about them. Delightful! We enjoy our squirrels greatly. Something has taken to stealing the whole suet feeder. Haven't found it yet this time. Almost time to take it in, anyway.

So much love in this post. You write so warmly about squirrels and it made me feel a little guilty. We had a one get into our attic several years ago and it wasn't a pleasant experience. Since then, I'm not a fan of Mr. Gray Squirrel but must admit that they can be entertaining.

Sounds as though you had a wonderful visit. We have so many squirrels around here they are constantly running over the shop roof. Sounds like something much larger, like maybe an elephant. If you'd like some more squirrels for your garden, I'll be happy to box them up and ship them to you...do you think the Post Office or UPS? LOL

Your breakfast sounds so good. I have gained 5 lbs.and I have to lose it. I need to get out and work in the yard!!! I have a squirrel that comes in my yard with no tail. I don't know if it was born that way or got it cut off somehow or what. The first time I saw it, he ran past my patio door and I just caught a glimpse of it out of the corner of my eye. I screamed out to Bob, "what in the world was that just went by the door?" I had never seen anything that looked like it around here. Then, I saw it again a couple of days later in the front yard and realized it was a squirrel. We have albino ones, too, once in a while.

I feed the birds myself. When Bob was alive, he fed the squirrels. He kept an ear of corn out on a spike on the fence for them. Animals keep us amused.
