A Sentiment

God knew what He was doing when He sent a gentle breeze and brought a lovely butterfly to set my heart at ease. The happiness of your friendship and the gentleness of your words have touched my life in special ways and now I feel assured. Thank you for your loyalty and for reading everyday. I only hope you find things to make a happy day.

They Came in Droves

Halloween 2010 was just wonderful. I was sitting on the porch with a bowl of treats just waiting for the first ones. Joe came out and joined me for a while. The time arrived when the little witches and goblins would be at the door....saying "trick or treat." Wouldn't you know that Audra (the puppy) and her pals would be the first ones. I ran and got the camera and took this picture. As she ran away I could only think of the favorite story The Pokey Little Puppy, because she fell down in the grass, and in the story the little puppy ran roly poly, pell mell, tumble bumble down the hill. Next came some other neighbor girls. Last night I don't think that anyone came without a costume. We had so many more kids than last year. They used all modes of transportation this year. Kids tumbled out of cars, lawn tractors pulled trailers, 4 wheelers, gators pulling trailers full of kids. I just took pictures of a few tractor drawn trailers to give you the idea.
Some more of Audra's friends. Keeley was the bride. When I told her she looked so pretty, she said, "I'm a dead bride."Only on Halloween! My neighbor was over to visit, on the porch, between kids. She had left her hubby at home to hand out the treats. She said that Halloween was probably her favorite holiday...just seeing the little kids and giving them a treat.

Here is a lawn tractor pulling a trailer. Some of the trailers were full of Moms and Dads and the kids ran from house to house. We live in a very hilly neighborhood, so you get a good workout on Halloween. The first year I lived here, I went with our grandson and could hardly keep up with him. I learned my lesson that year and now I stay on the porch.

A sweet little boy. He took the candy and started to leave when his Mom said, "What do you say?" Then he said, "Thankyou." She said they had been practicing all day. The kids were all very polite and most of them thanked us for the treats. I think that about half of the kids were in the 10-14 age bracket. I didn't see anyone without a costume. Moms and Dads were in costume too. I went through tons of candy and even raided the candy dish on the coffee table at the very end. I really couldn't count them all. A tiny ballerina bent down and smelled my flowers by the front walk. She said, "Pretty flowers" in her baby talk way. I thought....maybe a gardener in the making.
It's starting to get dark now, car lights are on, and I was thinking that I really wouldn't want to be driving tonight. They are darting in and out of traffic and not really paying attention. I guess the kids rule the road on Halloween and drivers have to be cautious.

Here is a jeep unloading in front of the house. Moms and Dads and kids on this one. They really make a party out of it. Very few kids came without parents. Some parents stayed at the end of the drive and some came up to the porch. Lots of them in costume. I guess on Halloween we are all kids.
Now it is really getting dark. The steady flow of kids continues. Pretty soon we will put Halloween away until another year. It ends so quickly. It's been cold on the porch. I am now in a sweatshirt, winter jacket, wrapped in a blanket. I guess you could say that I dressed for Halloween as Nanook of the North. I decide to go in and began the race to the door. I wanted to be on the computer, but the doorbell kept ringing and kept us hopping.

The last trailer that came by didn't get captured by the camera. It was decorated with Christmas lights all around. It was full of people young and old. They had folding chairs set up for some to sit on. They were laughing and eating treats that the kids were bringing.
Well, it's time to turn out the lights. Halloween is over for another year. Not much candy left...enough to fill the candy dish again. Our treats were a success...the kids said that they just got little candy bars...where were all the neat things...like tootsie pops, air heads, nerds, and dots?

The pumpkin in the window will be put away today. I think that we love this holiday, because it is a celebration of the last of the good weather, when the kids can be outside and having a ball. It's really the only holiday that is strictly for the kids. They can plan their costumes, paint their faces, little girls can wear makeup, use their creativity, everyone can be someone else for a night, and have a little freedom. Next is Thanksgiving and then Christmas...are you getting ready?

Sounds like a wonderful afternoon/ evening. I was so disappointed that we had so few trick or treaters come by this year.

It sounds like a fun night in your neighborhood. We had only 5 trick-or-treaters.

Sounds like a great Halloween night in your neighborhood. My grandson had a ball this year. My son called me this morning and said he was up at 2 a.m. with an upset stomach. I think he tried to eat all his candy! He was Hansel this year. Have a good week.

Oh My - Not a car pulled down this country road - Never has at this time. Now my girls share and it is like your neighborhood.
I think you enjoyed it - it has been so many years for me - do not know if I could handle it:)

When we had the two dogs, we would take treats to the neighbor kids ahead of time and then go away for a couple of hours. The dogs would go crazy when the doorbell rang and would try to get out. Now that we are alone...we have found that we really enjoy it. I think that living in this young neighborhood is keeping us younger and up to date on what the kids are doing today. We really enjoy the little ones and they come to visit almost everyday in the summer. Not quite so often now that they are in school. Our freezer always has ice cream treats in it and the candy dish is always full....much to their parents dismay :) Balisha
