A Sentiment

God knew what He was doing when He sent a gentle breeze and brought a lovely butterfly to set my heart at ease. The happiness of your friendship and the gentleness of your words have touched my life in special ways and now I feel assured. Thank you for your loyalty and for reading everyday. I only hope you find things to make a happy day.

The Contest

The contest started years ago...between my friend and I..
The simple rules were this...the first, a bird to spy.
The little bird in question was a Junco dear..
Some people call it Snowbird...this is what I hear.
When gay October rolls around and we're looking at the trees..
The leaves are falling everywhere.. whenever there's a breeze.
My friend and I love autumn, but our eyes are on the ground..
These little Juncos come and feed and never make a sound.
They clean up little seeds that other birdies scatter..
They fall upon the ground...it doesn't really matter.
These tiny little creatures are here to warn of snow..
We both love them so dearly, this is what I know.
The telephone rang yesterday.. it was early in the day..
I answered, it was Nancy, she had only called to say.
"I just saw a little Junco he was flying to and fro..
I love him oh so dearly, but soon there will be snow."
This day was very special.. it was her birthday I will tell..
The day she won the contest and was feeling oh so swell.
You won the game dear Nancy, but be ready to give cheer..
For I'll take the glory from you in just another year.
The little bird will come again ...I'll tell you one and all..
I'll spy the little visitor and be the first to call.
Balisha

I'm repeating this little poem this year. I had a request for a Junco poem and I knew that I had already written one. This "contest"started years ago ..between my dear friend, her Mom, and me. We were on watch each year to see who saw the first Junco. We were so excited to see this little bird, but really didn't love the weather he was forecasting. Nancy's Mom died a few years ago....so Nancy and I carried on alone. This year, out of the blue, Joe said, "I see a Junco." So, I guess we have to give it to Joe...he's the winner this year.

Brilliant poem, Balisha -- and I love the idea of your contest. The little juncos grace our yards as well. :)

What a sweet poem and even sweeter friendship! I just happened in from Wspr, for you can never fail if Mona's a fan.

I look forward to looking back and back into your archives, when the days are not so busy.

As a child in temperate western Tennessee, I always watched for the "Snow Birds". The first one was an exciting sight. I always had hopes that it was bringing snow on the way.
