A Sentiment

God knew what He was doing when He sent a gentle breeze and brought a lovely butterfly to set my heart at ease. The happiness of your friendship and the gentleness of your words have touched my life in special ways and now I feel assured. Thank you for your loyalty and for reading everyday. I only hope you find things to make a happy day.

Open Wide the Windows

This isn't a picture of my house...It's a painting that I found...
It's going to be a beautiful day. We can turn off the AC for a day and open the windows. Europeans have the habit of keeping the windows open. They seem to be a heartier people. Perhaps they are healthier too...We Americans heat our homes in the winter and turn on the AC as soon as the temp reaches a certain degree. The house gets stale with cooking odors etc. We don't notice the musty smell when we live in the closed environment. We use air fresheners to mask the odors.

When I was growing up, our windows were always open. In the winter, we left the window in our bedrooms open just a crack. I can remember my bed being next to the window and finding snow on the coverlet in the morning. I think that we slept better in those days. In the summer, we had only one fan. I had an upstairs bedroom and the fan was in the kitchen window. I was used to the heat and it never seemed to bother me. A lightweight nightgown and no covers, windows opened wide.On cleaning day my Mom would open the doors and leave them open to let in fresh air while we vacuumed. In the winter we would put on our coats while the door was open. She believed in fresh air...I didn't get sick very often either.

Today we use so many cleaning products – you know, the things with labels like “toxic” and “hazardous”. They’re supposed to be getting rid of bad stuff in our homes, but if we don’t get a little air circulating through our houses, I’m afraid they’re kind of adding to the bad stuff in our houses. We seem to have more allergys today. Runny noses, and red itchy eyes might be caused by living the way we do. I notice "green" items for sale in the supermarkets. I wonder how effective these products are. I use a new detergent, dish soap, and try to use a homemade concoction for cleaning. Here is a website with lots of tips for alternative cleaners. http://www.ecocycle.org/hazwaste/recipes.cfm It seems that white vinegar is a simple thing to use for cleaning. So, today, I'm going to throw open the windows and enjoy the gift that Mother Nature has given me. We can enjoy one or two days before the predicted week of 90 degree days coming.

Thanks for the website, Balisha. I clean constantly with toxic products. I'll try some that are not toxic.

Your years of growing up - sound like mine. I was brought up in Michigan and my bedroom shared with my sister was upstairs. Our windows were always open. My mother passed away 10 years ago and I still remember that she had to have her bedroom window cracked open all year.
I use vinegar all the time. Any natural product I can.

I can remember windows in the kitchen being cracked open even in the winter for some clean, fresh air! I try to do that now, although Mr. S says I'm freezing him out. LOL Funny- his parents slept with a window open in the dead of winter- snow blowing in and all...
Loved your pics from the neighboring town's farmer's market. There's always next week for you to shop your town's. I need to run down the road and find me some fresh corn for the grill tonight...
