Monthly Garden Bouquet for August...2010

I took a peek at Noelle's garden bouquet. http://www.azplantlady.com/ Her flowers are so lovely and abundant in her desert garden. The heat has spoiled so many of my flowers, but I found these little lilies. There's a story behind the little flower. I was visiting Mount Vernon several years ago. When we were leaving, I saw some little plants on a table.. that were for sale. One of them was this little lily. I had to have a remembrance of the most beautifully restored garden that I had ever seen. I like to think that these little flowers were there during the time of George Washington. I carefully wrapped it in plastic wrap, after putting a moistened paper towel around it. I carried it on the plane, in my lap. When I got home, I planted it in my little garden. It flourished and spread. When I left that home and moved here, I brought it with me. It took hold and is so dependable...it comes up each year. A couple of years ago, I cut off the seed pods and tossed them into the compost...I had lilies growing in my compost that year. It's hard for me to remember the name...Blackberry Lily, but that's what it is. The plant is actually a member of the iris family. Named blackberry lily because the plants get their common name from the fact that the seed pods contain shiny black seeds and resemble blackberry fruits. If the seeds are allowed to ripen and fall to the ground, your blackberry plants will increase into an attractive colony.
So, I was looking for something to put in a vase and there they were. A tiny arrangement....I tend to have tiny arrangements in my house all through the year. Flowers in a bud vase, tea cup, votive container, old salt shakers etc. Next month the bouquet will be bigger with the asters blooming.
