An Afternoon At Crumpets With a New Friend

I took an afternoon off today. A friend called and asked if I could get away for lunch. Joe had someone coming to give him communion and a telephone man would be here after that. (We are making some changes in our phones.) I thought he would be busy and not alone.....so I told her I could. We went to my favorite restaurant. It's called Crumpets...a ladies tearoom. We had such a good time getting to know each other better and eating in this delightful setting. It's very Victorian and they specialize in tiny sandwiches, quiche, homemade soup, and wonderful desserts and teas and flavored coffees. We had cream of cauliflower soup and a cheesy quiche. The plate was adorned with pickle slices, carrot strips, watermelon, grapes, and an orange slice. Everything was so fresh and very ladylike portions. We didn't have room for dessert, however. After lunch we visited a couple of gift shops across the street. We stopped on the way home, to buy sweet corn. When we got back to the house, she wanted to see my gardens. I took her on a tour around the yard. I began to feel embarrassed that everything wasn't in tip top shape, but before I apologized for the unkempt garden.... I thought, I've been so busy in the house with Joe. Since his surgery...he can do almost nothing. It has fallen on me to pick up where he left off. Not complaining, but I found that I can't do it all...something has to suffer. So, my gardens will be back next year. I will plan all winter and be ready in the Spring. Hopefully nothing will happen next year and she and I can take that garden walk again.

Glad you were able to get out and catch up with a friend. Nothing to be embarrassed about Balisha. Sometimes family commitments are at the top of our priority list. It happens to all of us at some point. :)

Hello Balisha,

It is interesting how your priorities change when a loved one is recovering from surgery. My garden has suffered a bit this summer as I have been busy caring for my son as he recovers from surgery. Thankfully, he is now walking again. I pray that your husband continues to recover and I am thankful that you were able to spend an afternoon with a friend :-)

Hi Balisha, is Joe progressing like the doctors expected?

Was that the Crumpets in Genoa you visited? Never been there but it looks so cute. There used to be a tiny restaurant in Winnebago called Between Friends that served sandwiches on home made bread with some wonderful cheeses. The owner alway played the best music and the shop was full of antiques. It was fun to go and have lunch and look at the gifts and antiques. Sadly, it changed hands and no its not the same.

Yes, family comes first. Joe is progressing beautifully. He's not a patient man, so this slow recovery is doubly hard for him. His incision is clean and healing, he walks with a cane, loves having visitors, and loves the memory foam mattress topper on our bed.He can't get interested in anything much yet...tv is starting to bore him. He's doing just like the drs. predicted. He starts therapy in a few weeks.

I came back to answer Marnie's question...yes it is Crumpet's in Genoa in the picture. It is a very busy little restaurant. Just what the little town of Genoa needed. I love to go there...the same people who own the restaurant own the stores across the street. Isn't it funny how little places like this can be so popular in a ordinary little town? They draw people from everywhere. I've heard that their teas have a waiting list for maybe a year. A little goldmine.

This was good for you. So pleased you could spend this time with a friend. Gardens are never done!
As time goes by I like my garden to look less manicured and more natural.
I did not pick veggies in my little garden yesterday and today many squash had to put on the compost pile.

Looks like my kind of restauarant Balisha - how pretty! It's wonderful you got a chance to get out and spend time with a friend. We all need a break, and I hope yours was a good one after working so hard taking care of your sweetie and picking up the slack as he recouperates.

Glad to hear Joe's doing well. It's a good sign that he's getting a bit bored. I know what you mean about him not being a patient man - brings back a few memories of the Lawn Man's recovery from surgery earlier this year. ;)

How nice that you were able to get out and enjoy a friend. I always worry when my yard isn't perfect when people look at it.(although it rarely is) but taking care of your husband is so much more important than your yard this year and it is good that you have your priorities in line.
