A Sentiment

God knew what He was doing when He sent a gentle breeze and brought a lovely butterfly to set my heart at ease. The happiness of your friendship and the gentleness of your words have touched my life in special ways and now I feel assured. Thank you for your loyalty and for reading everyday. I only hope you find things to make a happy day.

Grandmother's Sweet Williams

Here is what my Wild Sweet Williams in the woods look like. They are taller than the ones in my garden. They are not all opened up yet, but I found this one the other day. Here are the Sweet Williams from the front garden. Lower to the ground and such pretty colors. You never know, from year to year, what color will be prominent.

Do you have memories of your Grandmother's garden? The two flowers that I remember from my Grandma's garden are Sweet Williams and Iris. She didn't have a huge garden...just beds bordering the house. The yard was not very big. I remember Sweet Williams because of their beautiful colors. All shades of pink and red. When I married Joe, he said that his favorite in the garden was Sweet William too. He also loves Marigolds. There was a small patch of these flowers in the front garden. As the years have gone by....slowly my other flowers crowded out the Sweet Williams. Last year I planted a new patch of them. This year they are blooming. If I leave them alone...they will self seed. I have to remember to keep some of my garden bullies away from this cottage garden sweet flower, so they come back again and again. I planted lots of wildflower seeds in the woods....now we have Wild Sweet Williams back there. It is a spot of bright color in the shady woods.

Sweet-William (Dianthus barbatum) is a short-lived perennial or biennial that was introduced from Europe in the late 18th century. It is a member of the Pink family, and characterized by a compact mound of clustered Phlox-like single or double flowers with toothed or fringed petals. Old varieties of Sweet-William were known for their fragrance, but only a few of this type are available today. A wildflower known as Wild Sweet William is actually from the Phlox genus, Phlox maculatum.

Hi Balisha, I never knew my grandmother but my mother loved Sweet Williams. My favorite flower from my mother's garden was the Iris and Lilacs. I remember waking up in the morning with the windows open and smelling those lilacs. I still love the smell of them today and they are my favorite flower. Your header is beautiful.

I have never had sweet williams. Beautiful.

One of my grandmothers had a garden, but she never planted flowers. She planted tomatoes, green peppers, and corn. She hasn't planted in many years. She thinks its too much work now.

My other grandmother went to the garden center and picked up red geraniums every year and planted them by her back door. Then she'd buy a hanging plant and that was that.

My mother, after years ignoring any kind of landscaping besides lawnmowing and bushtrimming, has started her own perennial garden in the last few years. It's been fun developing our garden skills together.

Hi Judy,
I love the lilacs too. Their smell is heavenly.I have two.

Lynn,
My other Grandma had peonies too. We had big bouquets for each kid's graduation party.

Elenka,
I think we all have some kind of naughty plant that just pushes his way in.

Hi Tam,
Isn't it fun to compare notes with your Mom? Does she live near?

My mother always had a patch of the fragrant old fashioned kind. I have some not yet blooming. Mom loved dianthus and carnations.

When I drove thru Rockford yesterday I noticed how far ahead the plants were compared to mine. Lots of peony and Stella d'Ora blooming. At my house things are far behind. Could Winnebago be colder than Rockford?

Hi Marnie...I don't know what to say about that. Wouldn't you think that things would be the same. My Stellas aren't blooming yet. I've seen a few peonies in Byron....but many houses don't have them blooming yet.Didn't peonies always bloom about memorial day?

Daisies and Apples would be wonderful! Please show it when you are finished. You might even show it on Metamorphosis Monday. :) Ok..I know you probably won't but I'm just suggesting.
