A Sentiment

God knew what He was doing when He sent a gentle breeze and brought a lovely butterfly to set my heart at ease. The happiness of your friendship and the gentleness of your words have touched my life in special ways and now I feel assured. Thank you for your loyalty and for reading everyday. I only hope you find things to make a happy day.

This is the front of our house two years ago. The asters in the front of the yews are a shocking pink and so pretty. I planted them a couple of years before. Everybody commented on them and wanted a piece of them.
This is the front of the house last year. The asters got off to a great start. They got to be the same size. They were given the same care. Sometime after the 4th they started to get brown leaves from the bottom up. The leaves shrunk in size. They ended up very wispy stalks and tiny buds that never opened. I finally cut them down to the ground, because they were unsightly.

This year started out exactly as last. Great looking plants till around the 1st of July. They were given the same care and this is what the plants look like right now. I am really puzzled. The only think that I can think of is the hanging basket that died in the same way...from the bottom up. When I dumped it out there were hundreds of earwigs. I believed at the time that they were destroying the root system. These asters are planted in mulch. I have seen lots of earwigs this year, in the mulch. Could the same thing be happening to the asters? Any ideas?

What a shame, asters are such a great late summer-early fall perennial. It could be the earwigs, they are destructive little pests.

Balisha, I am so sorry I called you Amber. I am tired tonight and I realized the minute I did it. I am also terrible with names! Guess senility is catching up with me.

Hello ladies,
I am going to get rid of the asters and start again with something else. Two years is enough time for me to fuss with them.
Hey Judy, I kind of like the name Amber. This is funny...I have an old friend and it seems that everytime we are together she calls me JoAnne once in our conversation. We just laugh about it.

I had great luck with asters one year, but they didn't come back after that. Texas weather is challenging to say the least for gardening. I read through some of your blog entries and I'm so glad you like Torres, too. I think she was so wonderful being the anchor in the relay race.

The mushrooms are probably from too much moisture. Not so much a problem here this year. :) It has been one of the hottest and driest summers ever. I'm just really glad I have a bunch of native plants.

Hi Amber,
Thanks for reading. Hope you cool off soon. We have had unusual weather this summer. It is almost fall like right now. No 90's this year. I just hope our winter isn't like last year.
