Good morning....the first Sunday of the New Year. I woke early and took care of Laddie and then sat my the window. I was watching to see if the Sparrow would be my first bird to see again today. The Sparrow was the first bird that I saw on New Year's Day this year. Many people don't really like the sparrows...they grab all the seed, are messy, push other birds out of the choice houses, they multiply too fast, kids torment them etc. I have never felt that way. When you really look at a little sparrow...their breasts are feathers of a beautiful soft gray color. Some have a little white collar. Their main feathers are different shades of brown, burnt umber, burnt sienna, black and other colors mixed in. They really are charming little birds. I remember the old favorite song...His Eye Is On The Sparrow....when I see these tiny birds. In the days of our Lord sparrows were sold for a very low price -- two of them for a copper coin. If a family could afford no sacrifice...some brought sparrows to the temple. So insignificant were these little birds that if you bought four sparrows the seller would throw in one more for free. It was this extra sparrow of which Jesus said, "and not one of them is forgotten before God." His care for His creation is so great that even this extra sparrow is noted and observed by God!
If God is concerned about the tiny sparrow, He must care so much for us and our well being. It is interesting that Jesus chose the most common of all birds to teach a profound truth: in God's eyes, no one is insignificant. So, maybe when you look at these little creatures you may have a different feeling for them. During the harsh winter, birds are trying to get by. We can help out by feeding them...there's enough for all at our house.
