A Sentiment

God knew what He was doing when He sent a gentle breeze and brought a lovely butterfly to set my heart at ease. The happiness of your friendship and the gentleness of your words have touched my life in special ways and now I feel assured. Thank you for your loyalty and for reading everyday. I only hope you find things to make a happy day.

Sunday Thoughts

Parsnips...one of my favorite vegetables...sizzling in the pan. Yum!

It's kind of dreary this morning with a little rainy mix....a good day to stay in and do some fun things. There's a pot roast thawing on my counter. I'll fix it in a cooking bag along with potatoes, carrots, parsnips, onions and assorted peppers. I started adding peppers to my pot roast years ago. I knew how tasty Italian beef was with the green peppers...and thought that they would add an extra flavor. I will do the roast with the packet of onion soup mix etc. I love a cold day with good smells coming from the kitchen. I was reading a book this week about a widow who didn't cook anymore, because there was no one to eat the meal. I thought to myself...no one to cook for...what about herself? I was alone for awhile and always cooked a meal. How could I live without good smells coming from the kitchen? I know that I wouldn't cook the big meals that I do now, but smaller simple things that are tasty. A piece of fish with a wonderful coleslaw, a small steak with a hot baked potato, a pork chop with homemade applesauce, a meatloaf with leftovers for a sandwich, pastas of all kinds, homemade soups that cook all day, and last but not least...tasty veggies....greens, squashes, sweet potatoes, string beans, juicy tomatoes, root veggies, salads...and then desserts...puddings, small tarts, cookies, oh, I could go on all day. I would still set a pretty table....sometimes in the living room. I would have company over for meals...and send some leftovers home with them. I would always cook...it's part of me.
My bookcase arrived day before yesterday and it is full of books already. It is a perfect fit and just as I wanted. I'll show a picture later. Now I can sit by the glass doors and watch the birds and read about them. I have my binoculars on the shelf too...and my camera at the ready.
Tonight we will probably watch the Grammys. We both love music of all kinds and we do enjoy watching the stars and what they are wearing. Downton Abbey is on at the same time, so I will record it. I find that there are so  many good TV programs...you just have to look for them. We have a bazillion channels and find ourselves looking at the same ones all the time. Once in a while we will look through them all and find something so interesting. What a pleasure having a theater in our home so to speak....when we want to put a book down and be entertained.
We went to Mass last night and were told about the Lenten plans for our Church this season. It all begins with Ash Wednesday, which is this week. We'll go to Church and receive our Ashes and then begin our Lenten journey for this year. The liturgical season of Lent coincides with spring...(just as spring renews herself each year we do too with Lent). Lent calls to mind the new life and growth, the hope and change that will characterize the time of prayer and  penance.
Well, that's about it for today. I have things to do...first on the list is breakfast. Have a wonderful day.

The above is the story-obituary in the New York Times for the bird watcher...Starr Saphir. It was interesting to read and I thought you might like it.

It sounds like you are off to a wonderful day, Balisha. I have to try putting peppers in with the roast, it sounds delicious. I'm not sure what I would do if I were just cooking for myself. I truly love to cook but the thought of not having my husband and/or family to cook for truly overwhelms me so I really don't know.

Enjoy the Grammy's tonight...I love the performances myself.

XO,
Jane

I would love that parsnip recipe, Balish! I've only cooked them a few times, mostly in stew, but that looks so good!
I haven't gotten into the pbs show everyone seems to be watching, but I haven't even ever seen a single episode of American Idol or any of those popular shows, either.
I am an odd one, I guess.
I hope you are warm and dry today. It sure makes me wonder why we live in such terrible climate!

Heaven, you just described our evening. Frid chicken, baked potatoes, cold slaw, bisquit, corn, and a delcious cake with peach filling for desert.
Now..the chicken was from KFC, the slaw also, the baked potatoes I baked, the cake a neighbor brought over cuz she loves us. :)
I still cook. I guess it's in me as well. Tonight I got off easy.

I love the beginning of this upcoming season. It's wonderful. You are always so positive and always so dear.
The grammy's begin soon..must brew a pot of tea! The fireplace is burning brightly..
Sending you a hug..

Here's the recipe for Sissy...
Peel the parsnips and cut them in planks. Parboil until a fork goes in easily.Take out of water and put on paper towels to dry. Dredge them in a flour, salt and pepper mixture. Fry them in oil with a TBS of butter...until browned. These are very good.
