A Sentiment

God knew what He was doing when He sent a gentle breeze and brought a lovely butterfly to set my heart at ease. The happiness of your friendship and the gentleness of your words have touched my life in special ways and now I feel assured. Thank you for your loyalty and for reading everyday. I only hope you find things to make a happy day.

The MRI by Balisha

Three years ago a tumor was taken from my head..
Tumor is a word that everybody dreads.
After having surgery, my doctor said to me..
"The tumor was benign as far as I can see.
Your will have to have an MRI, but just occasionally."
So here it is October, and time for me to go..
An MRI this morning..really just to show..
That I am free and clear, no tumor in my head.
I wish I could have stayed home.. in my cozy bed.
The appointment is for 10 o'clock and I am here on time..
An hour or so today.. to find  I'm really  fine.
The nurse comes out to get me and we go to get me ready..
I climb aboard...she takes my hand to keep me very steady.
She puts my head between two wedges to hold it safe in place..
She covers me with blankets ..warm.. and one across my face.
A button to push is given me, if I want to stop the test..
She leaves the room...the noise begins...I relax and try to rest.
The banging noise is oh so loud...concentration comes in spurts..
What to do to keep me calm, through a test that doesn't hurt.
What could I do to calm myself...something that takes no thought?
Some prayers I've known since childhood..in my Sunday school were taught.
Then I begin to say the one that comforted me at night..
When I was just a little girl ..tucked in my bed so tight.
It all began with "Now I Lay Me " a childish prayer it's true..
But today it gave me comfort... and really got me through....
The  apprehension of the test... that I would have today..
It's over now... and now I pray that I will be OK.

Here's some information on the little prayer that I learned years ago...
This delightful old English prayer said by children and their parents at bedtime has long ago been shortened to only its last verse. There is more (as I was taught):

Matthew, Mark, Luke and John,
Bless the bed that I lie on.
The are four corners to my bed,
Four angels round my head
One to watch, and one to pray,
And two to bear my soul away.
Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
If I should die before I wake,
I pray the Lord my soul to take.

I went through a whole number of prayers yesterday. From parts of the Rosary, the Lord's Prayer, the 23rd Psalm, and finally this little prayer. I really couldn't concentrate on anything else...so these prayers that I have known for years were easy to say to keep me quiet and calm. It worked for me for 45 min. yesterday. Now, I'm finished and it's in my doctor's hands and God's.

Balisha, I have kept coming to your site to read about the MRI.
So pleased it is over.
When I have had them
I also pray
continually.
Thank you for the new prayer...

My mother and I used to say these prayers before I went to bed. I know that they will work for you. Those MRI's are a real treat aren't they? I just kept counting to outguess the next sequence of noise.

Thanks everybody for your kind comments. I haven't heard from the doctor, but they said if anything was wrong...they'd call right away. So, with that in mind I think I can relax.
I'm going to do some fall cleanup tomorrow....ugh!

Hope all's well Balisha. Sounds like no news is good news, though I think they really should call even when the news is good.

My doctor will call, but that was what they said at the hospital. He's very thorough and prompt.

Oh, Balisha, what wonderful news! I would have done the same thing. I recite such as those in my mind at night to calm myself and put me to sleep. All from my childhood: Twenty-third Psalm, Lord's Prayer, the little song "Jesus Love's Me", and, yes, Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep... except I only ever heard the last four lines. Thank you for sharing the whole prayer.

I forgot. I meant to say that one of my grandmothers had that very same picture over the head of her bed. I loved it as a child, and I still do.

Balisha...there is another line in the bedtime prayer that we always say: "And if I live for other days, I pray the Lord to guide my ways. Amen"

Peace...Love...Good Health

Hi Valerie,
I never knew this ending. I really like that it ends this way. The way I was taught... tells what we our wishes are if we die...this tells about our wishes for living longer. Thanks for leaving your comment on this post.
