A Sentiment

God knew what He was doing when He sent a gentle breeze and brought a lovely butterfly to set my heart at ease. The happiness of your friendship and the gentleness of your words have touched my life in special ways and now I feel assured. Thank you for your loyalty and for reading everyday. I only hope you find things to make a happy day.

Time Away from Home

We got away for a couple of days. Spent some time with my daughter LuAnn, who has a home on a lake in Wisconsin. The weather couldn't have been better...but the fishing could have. We didn't catch many fish, but  that was OK with me, because I just like sitting in the boat and looking at things that I don't see everyday. Grasses, water birds, turtles  and all that goes into the makeup of a lake home. There were wood duck houses ever so often along the shore line. LuAnn has a tree house where the tiny squirrels play...she calls them Fairy Diddles. Humming bird feeders in several spots along the front of her new porch. The porch goes across the front of the house. A metal roof gave us an exciting time. The acorns were falling and when the first one hit...Joe wondered if we should take cover.....it was that loud. Years before we were attacked by the acorns, but now with the roof overhead we are protected. The best spot for fishing is under the old trestle down the lake a bit. We anchored the boat under the trestle and were given a thrill when a train went overhead. When my grandsons were at her house...they climbed the trestle and walked across on the metal path. This was very disconcerting for Grandma sitting on the ground. I'm glad they got that over with and don't do it anymore. Whew! LuAnn is staying until tomorrow...then back to DC and her job. While she is gone the lake will be drained...3 inches a day. She'll be back in a couple of weeks and it will look quite different. All the boats have to be out of the water by Sept. 11th. That is when they start the project of working on the 150 yr old dam, which has been damaged by recent flooding etc. . The lake will be drained....only the channel will be left. It will sit like that until May of 2014. There are 9 ft. of muck on the bottom and lots of weeds have taken over. They are hoping for a dry winter and a hot summer next year, for the muck to compact and the weeds killed off. No fish will be killed in this process. This is sort of a sad situation for many businesses along the way, who make their living from the fishermen and tourists. LuAnn said that she hadn't been sad taking the boats out of the water before, but this year it is different...a year and a half with no lake. What will she do? Well, they told the residents that now is the time to repair docks, clean the beaches and boats and get ready for a wonderful new lake in 2014. This is going to be interesting to follow. I think she said it's about a $10 million project.
We enjoyed our time away from home, but were so tired and ready to be back to our own bed. We didn't realize how out of shape we were until this time away from home. We have to get busy and get active. As I look out the window here this morning...leaves are scattered on the lawn. Some of the trees have started changing color. I think it will probably be a brown and crispy fall. Wish we had received some rain from Isaac, but it skirted around us again.

It sounds as if you have had a really nice break.
You have been lucky to see the lake before it's been drained for maintenance.

How nice to have gotten away for a bit. Sounds like a wonderful weekend. I do feel sorry for the businesses there whose livelihood depends on the lake.

I think I know how Joe felt: One time I was driving along a country road on my way to an apple orchard, when a black walnut fell from a tree and hit the top of the car. I nearly jumped out of my skin!! Scared me! Later, I could laugh about it and be glad it wasn't an Osage orange tree fruit.

Glad you had a nice break but as Frank Sinatra always sang, 'It's nice to go traveling, but oh! so nice to come home'

Trees changing very early your way it sounds Balisha.

Hi Jan...We wanted to go one last time before the lake was repaired. After the work is done...it will be so nice.

Hi Ernestine...We are lucky that she bought her home so close to us. Our whole family loves the lake and she is so good about sharing it.

Hi Barbee...Your comment about the Osage tree made me laugh.

Hi Barbara...It is nice to get away, but I agree home is best.
