Growing up in Illinois in the 40's...we used to make snow ice cream. This was my favorite thing to do in the winter. Mom would take a big bowl and fill it with fresh snow (about 8 cups). Stir in one 14-oz can of sweetened condensed milk and some Hershey's chocolate syrup, to taste (probably 1/4 to 1/2 cup). We enjoyed it this way and without the chocolate syrup. This treat took almost no time and it was really delicious. We would make this right after it snowed before the snow got dirty. I wonder now how good it actually was. We didn't have many treats when I was really small, so probably anything sweet would taste good.
These recipes start out with the same basic ingredient, a huge bowl of snow (8-12 cups). You just stir in the other ingredients to make the ice cream.
Vanilla Snow Ice Cream: Add to snow... 1 cup sugar, 1 tsp vanilla, 1 cup cream or milk,
2nd Vanilla Recipe: Add to snow...14-oz can sweetened condensed milk, 1 tsp vanilla
Chocolate Snow Ice Cream: Mix together and add to snow...1 cup sugar,1 cup chocolate milk
Quik Chocolate Recipe: Mix together and add to snow...1 14-oz can sweetened condensed milk, Nestle's Quik, to taste.
Strawberry Snow Ice Cream: Mix together and add to snow....1 package frozen sliced strawberries, thawed,1 14-oz can sweetened condensed milk,1 small package strawberry-flavored gelatin.
I wonder if people do this anymore? It would be a fun thing to do this weekend for the kids...we are supposed to have some more snow during the weekend. Maybe if the little ones are bored with the Super Bowl...it could be fun for them and maybe a memory they will keep forever.
