My Plants from Seed are Waiting in the Wings

Here are some of my pots of seedlings that I started in the basement. I have about 15 pots arranged around the yard. They are mostly cosmos, marigolds, lavender, zinnias, and bunny tails. I like having these plants in individual pots, because I will be able to move them around and put them where I need a different color. They are farther behind in growth than the annuals I normally would have bought at a garden center, but I can wait...we gardeners are patient.
I usually use terra cotta pots. I like the natural color of the terra cotta...it blends with everything. I even have a couple of empty terra cotta pots mixed in, because I like their shape. I look for the old ones at yard sales. The older the better....mossy, dirty looking pots find a home with me. I used to have a lot of these old pots...living in a very old town. But now, living in a new development...I find very few. These younger people just don't have them and maybe some wouldn't appreciate a pot that wasn't shiny and new.

Some of the pots have more that one type of plant in them. The lavender has some allysum planted around it, for example. I'm thinking that when the drought comes...and it always does, I can move these pots all together and water them all at one time. The perennials don't need watering so much. It will save on water and time.

It was a good experience...growing in pots in my basement this year. It gave me something to do along the lines of gardening during the bad weather outside. It gave me hope that spring would come. It gave me joy...to watch a teeny, tiny, seed develop into something of beauty. These plants are waiting in the wings...soon they will open and put a different splash of color in our yard.

PS...Do you want to know what I'm planting next? I have cactus seeds.

You can start a cactus plant from seed??? This little non-gardener is amazed, for sure! The extent of my gardening is in pots, ferns, daisies, and sedum in a bunch of pots on my patio. And 3 pots in the front stoop w/ sweet potato vine, vinca, geraniums, etc. I cannot grow in the ground :=( cause they all seem to die... so pots it is! Yours all look great, especially being from seedlings. I love the old pots, but sometimes age my newer ones to look old- have you done that, too? Hope you're having a good weekend.I'm cleaning up f/my project. ick

Snap! I planted sweet allysum with my lavender too .. how great that all your seedlings did so well. My Zinnias and Scarlet Sage have sprouted, as well as the two basils .. gardening from seed is very rewarding :)

Hi Sue,I have never started cactus from seed. I saw a package and bought them. They look a little fussy. I won't show them if I fail :) I still covet that basket of yours.Have fun cleaning.

Ohiomom (is your name Linda?)...I planted those zinnias around my mailbox. The dogs are watering it. :(

I love all your potted plants. I do this, too, and have patience. I tried the cactus seeds but nothing has ever come up in my pot. It is outside and probably getting too much water. I grown some perrenials in pots and then transplant them to the yard, too.

Hi Judy,

Balisha, What kind of light do you have in your basement to start these plants. I start seedlings in my guest bedroom - at a south window - but they still get so leggy.

The pink rose on my blog does bloom again. It is a Jackson & Perkings Hybrid named Gertrude Jekyll

I also love the old terra cotta pots that have water marks and signs of moss growning on them. I NEVER get rid of a pot. I stack them under my potting bench..fill the shed with them..(I am terrible at hourding old garden things.. :)
I am learning from you..and love watching and reading about things you do..such as growing things in the basement in winter. In California there really is little need for that..as a corner of the patio near the hot water heater door is good and still has light. During the day they could be moved to the outer edge..
See? You make my mind run wild with idea's for what I COULD do!
:)
