While eating at neighbors just the other day..
Turkeys are on sale I heard Kelly say.
Forty cents a pound is what think I heard..
Just a little money for a tasty bird.
I went to my google and typed in.. sale..
Several stores came up without any fail.
Walmart it said.. is the closest one..
I jumped in my car to get the job done.
The butcher that I found was just unloading birds..
The sale starts today are the words that I heard.
I grabbed my two turkeys then gave a quick turn..
I pushed my cart so quickly...the cart tires burned.
After checking out my groceries and paying the bill..
I got in the car and drove up the hill.
While driving home today thoughts came to mind...
An invitation for dinner from kids that were so kind.
We'll eat and be merry with everyone nice...
Knowing two birds are home sitting on the ice.
When we're hungry for turkey in a week or so..
Someone will be happy...and his name is Joe.
Years ago my Mom was the holiday hostess in our family. She loved having the holidays...people coming and bringing their specialty for all to sample. As years went on, she began to get nervous entertaining, and that's when I started having the holiday meals. We would gather at our table and eat a meal that left us groaning afterward. No room for pie...Mom and brought the pies (her speciality) We couldn't pass up her delicious pumpkin, mince, and lemon meringue pies. We stuffed ourselves and could hardly walk. I asked her if she wanted to take some turkey home for sandwiches. She said with a little grin on her face, "No thank you....I fixed a turkey yesterday...we have plenty." She did that for the rest of her life...if she was going for Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner...she would always fix a turkey at home for she and Dad to share. I miss those moments with my Mom. When holidays come around I look back to those days and see her smiling....her little turkey waiting in her frig.
