A Sentiment

God knew what He was doing when He sent a gentle breeze and brought a lovely butterfly to set my heart at ease. The happiness of your friendship and the gentleness of your words have touched my life in special ways and now I feel assured. Thank you for your loyalty and for reading everyday. I only hope you find things to make a happy day.

An Early Morning Visitor

If you were a kid sometime between 1955 and 1975, you likely remember the Golden Nature Guides. They were pocket-sized books filled with incredible drawings of animals, plants, rocks and minerals. The first one, Birds, was printed in 1949 and was illustrated by James Gordon Irving. I still have the bird book and the insect book.

Here is the nature quide that I was writing about. Mine is falling apart from so much use. I think that it might be my favorite bird book.

The Blue Jay by Balisha

Such a pretty morning...the sun is shining bright..
The feeder hangs so full of seeds..I filled it just last night.
The little sparrows  come to eat...they like the morning fare..
A bird sound comes from the woods to tell them to beware.
I'm watching them through window pane...they are a busy bunch..
The sound from woods behind the house...gives me my first hunch.
A chickadee and  nuthatch soon join the lively crew..
The bird sound grows louder... now I wonder what they'll do.
A shadow goes across the glass and lands in Ash tree tall..
A bird I see of bright, bright blue...on a branch that's very small.
The tiny birds are frightened...together they take flight..
The big blue bird bends the branch and flys with all his might.
He lands on feeder swinging and looks around to see..
If any other birds will dare to keep him company.
He looks at me and cocks his head as if to say "good morning"..
Then eats his fill and suddenly leaves not giving any warning.
The little birds return to see if he has left some seed...
They chatter now and look around and eat to fill their needs.
They pay no mind to me today...they know that I will come..
And fill the feeder late today when the feeding time is done.
The big blue bird...it was a Jay as many of you know..
He comes each day..I watch him.. as he puts on his lively show.

Thank you for starting my day with this lovely poem. I love the blue jays, they add such a nice bit of color and activity to our feeder. When you mentioned the Golden Nature Guides I realized these must be the ones by author Dorothy Bennett. I just did a feature on her and one of her other books. I will be sure to look for the 'Guides' next time I am picking!

I just put a picture of the book that I was talking about. I remember having a Golden dictionary for kids and a Golden book about birds and animals.
Some people call the Blue Jays thugs, but I always welcome them to the feeders. I too love their color and sassy character.

I have one of these books that I picked up at an antique shop years ago. It looked so familiar I had to have seen them somewhere. The poem is very sweet!

I had that book!! I love the poem as I love the Blue Jays--their call makes me feel like I am "up north" in the woods. Cardinals can be a bit sassy too--yesterday, I had a Blue Jay on one side of the feeder and a Cardinal on the other side. I don't think either one knew the other was there, LOL.
