Another Birthday

You may wonder why I'm posting a picture of cupcakes today. Well, it's my birthday and I was surfing the net this morning to find a perfect birthday cake...one that I would like to have, if I could. Since I am a knitter...these really appealed to me. I just keep looking at them and knowing that they took a lot of talent and patience.

The very first birthday cake that I remember was way back when I was in grade school. It was during the war and sugar was hard to come by. Mom made the most beautiful maraschino cherry birthday cake for me that year. It was the only birthday party when I was growing up. We invited some friends and my cousins. Grandma came to help. I remember we had whipped cherry jello instead of ice cream. I think that ice cream cost too much. I can remember one of the kids saying, "A birthday party without ice cream!" A few birthday gifts stand out in my head...a story book doll and a little glass shaped hurricane lamp full of tiny candies. Grandma played the piano while we played musical chairs.

Well, that was long ago and as I said last year....Awhile back I didn't tell people when it was my birthday, but that was a few years ago. Now, in my middle 70's I find I have more to celebrate than just another year tacked on to my age. It's time to celebrate life...Getting to this age and feeling pretty good is a gift to be celebrated. Old age isn't so bad...we wait for this age, when we can do pretty much what we want. I feel so fortunate to be like this right now, when so many others are having health issues.So, I'll celebrate today in a simple way, and thank my lucky stars for this birthday :) Balisha
