I Call My Home....Hosta House

When we redid the landscaping at our house a few years ago, I purchased Hostas from Bridgewood Gardens. I anxiously awaited the box that held all the plants. They were wrapped with care and not a leaf was damaged. I started planting in the woods...later to see that it was a mistake. I put the blue leaf ones in the woods and the lighter shaded ones up near the house. We can hardly see the ones in the woods right now. Everything has grown so huge back there with all the rain and the early warm spring. They are the size of huge bushel baskets. If I have the energy this fall, I will try to move them...although I don't know where. I selected little hostas for the Mary's garden. They are lime green and don't lop over into the lawn, so that mowing is easy.There is nothing more ugly in the garden, than a half chewed hosta leaf...chewed by the lawnmower.

The trip around the yard ends up in the back, where I planted a few around the edge of the house. They behaved themselves until now. I'll get out to take more pictures later today. They are huge!! They have crowded out the azaleas, lilies, and other pretty flowers. This fall will find me with my shovel dividing these beauties. I will probably give some of them away. I've had no trouble getting rid of hostas. They are so expensive to buy.

When I chose them, I chose them by how big they would get, color, and their often funny names. How about Golden Waffles or Guacamole? At Bridgewood you can click on the size or color and a whole list of them will come up for you to choose from.

I guess that you could say that the hosta is my favorite plant for the yard. When I moved into a house on an average city lot...with 19 trees, I found that I couldn't have my "sun plants" anymore. I joined a garden club and on a garden tour, I saw my first hosta. I was hooked. I wanted one of each.

Now, I'm pretty satisfied with the selection that I have. I sit here thinking about those big babies out in the woods and wonder if I could just use the weed whacker and trim around them...they would stand out more and I wouldn't have to go to all that work. We'll see how things go here. Joe is in constant pain and is getting ready for his surgery on the 6th of July. I'll probably have my hands full here in the house, so I may not get the yard work done. I'll just play it by ear.
